Da Vinci Got it Wrong! The Histogram Myth

MANY resources state a correct histogram shape...

“The ideal histogram is a nice bell shape that peaks around the middle” - Nature Photography Blog

“The bell-shaped histogram shows a good spread of tones and correct exposure” - Major Photography Magazine

“The ideal histogram will be bell-shaped (a normal curve), with the graph just reaching the ends of the brightness scale” - Major Camera Brand!

I've got good news...

This is absolute nonsense (with all due respect). So why do I say this? How can I prove it? What does Da Vinci and Rembrandt have to say about this? What IS the histogram vital for?

I did a talk at The Photography Show 2026 at The NEC in Birmingham that covers all of this, and you can watch the full talk here. Sign up below to get immediate free access.
